December Update
It's been a month since we launched Finistry in beta. Thank you to everyone who signed up, sent feedback, and helped us find bugs. Here's what we've been working on.
What we shipped
Invoicing improvements
Invoices now work the way they should:
- Email with PDF attachment — Your clients receive a professional invoice they can open anywhere, not just a link
- Clear invoice statuses — Draft, sent, paid, overdue. The status flow matches how you'd track income for tax purposes
- Edit before sending — Fix mistakes in draft invoices before they go out
Payment tracking
You can now record payments against invoices:
- Partial payments — Client paid half? Record it, and Finistry tracks the remaining balance
- Automatic status updates — When an invoice is fully paid, it moves to "Paid" automatically
- Outstanding at a glance — See exactly who owes you and how much
Behind the scenes
We rewrote invoice status logic twice. The first version was too simple — it didn't account for HMRC's distinction between "sent" and "pending payment". The second attempt over-engineered it with statuses nobody needed.
The current version is a balance: enough structure for good record-keeping, simple enough to understand at a glance.
What's next
January focus:
- Receipt scanning — Snap a photo, AI extracts the data
- Bank feed improvements — Faster sync, better categorisation
- Quarterly reminders — Never miss a Self Assessment deadline
