HMRC Introduces GOV.UK One Login for New Customers
New HMRC customers can now register using GOV.UK One Login instead of Government Gateway. Existing users keep their current accounts.
From 9 February 2026, new HMRC customers can register using GOV.UK One Login — a simpler way to access government services with just an email and password.
This is a gradual rollout. If you already have a Government Gateway account, nothing changes for now.
Key Points
- New customers: Can register using GOV.UK One Login from 9 February 2026
- Existing customers: Continue using Government Gateway as normal
- No action needed: Current users will be contacted when it's time to switch
What is GOV.UK One Login?
It's a single sign-in system for government services. Instead of separate logins for HMRC, passports, and other services, you'll eventually use one account for everything.
GOV.UK One Login uses email and password authentication, replacing the 10-12 digit Government Gateway user IDs.
What to Do
- If you're new to HMRC: You can now register with GOV.UK One Login
- If you have a Government Gateway: Keep using it — HMRC will contact you when it's time to move
- If you use One Login for other services: You'll need to continue using Government Gateway for HMRC until migration is complete
