HMRC has issued a final warning: 3.3 million people still need to file their 2024-25 Self Assessment tax return. The deadline is 31 January 2026.

8.6 million customers have already filed successfully. If you're among those who haven't, now is the time to act.

Penalties for Late Filing

Miss the deadline and you'll face:

  • £100 automatic penalty (even if you owe nothing)
  • Additional penalties if you're more than 3 months late
  • Up to 5% of tax owed after 12 months

Can't Pay in Full?

If you can't pay your tax bill by 31 January, contact HMRC before the deadline to set up a Time to Pay arrangement. Don't ignore it — reach out before 30 January for phone support.

Coming in April: Making Tax Digital

From 6 April 2026, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax begins for eligible sole traders and landlords. This is a separate requirement — but if you're affected, start preparing now.
