Key Numbers
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Returns already filed | 6.36 million |
| Still outstanding | 5.65 million |
| Expected total filers | 12+ million |
Who Needs to Act
You need to file a Self Assessment return if you:
- Are self-employed with trading income over £1,000
- Are a CIS subcontractor
- Have rental income from property
- Have other untaxed income (dividends, savings over your allowance)
If you're unsure whether you need to file, use HMRC's Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return tool.
Late Filing Penalties
Missing the deadline triggers automatic penalties:
| When | Penalty |
|---|---|
| 1 day late | £100 fixed penalty |
| 3 months late | £10 per day (up to £900) |
| 6 months late | 5% of tax due or £300 (whichever is greater) |
| 12 months late | Additional 5% or £300 |
These penalties apply even if you owe no tax.
