Why File Early?
Filing early doesn't mean paying early — tax isn't due until 31 January regardless of when you file.
Benefits of filing now:
- Know what you owe — time to budget or set up a payment plan
- Avoid the January rush — fewer delays and less stress
- Catch errors early — time to gather missing information
- PAYE option — file by 30 December to pay through your tax code (if eligible)
Who Needs to File?
Use HMRC's Self Assessment checker if you're unsure. Common reasons include:
- Self-employment income over £1,000
- Rental income from property
- CIS subcontractor work
- Untaxed income (dividends, savings interest above your allowance)
- High Income Child Benefit Charge
Coming Soon: Making Tax Digital
From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 will need to report quarterly under Making Tax Digital. This is the last "traditional" Self Assessment year for many.
